European Tour’s top talent play at the 2012 Kenya Open

With 22 Kenyans taking on the field yesterday within the event?¡¥s first round, and also the cut projected from two-under to level par, you might be forgiven can be expected at the very least twelve Kenyans to grace the weekend. However, year after year, only two or three professionals increase the risk for cut. On advice from my good friend Danny Muchira, a practiced golf hacker and part of the two Karen and Muthaiga Golf Clubs, today's column will dwell on what can be done to fix the sad state in our paid ranks.

The building blocks of the sport are undeniably junior development; South African Ernie Els, an all time favourite golfer of mine, started golf aged 8 years. As soon as he was 14 yrs . old he would be a scratch Ping K15 fairway wood golfer as well as in 1984, he won the Junior World Golf Championship in the Boys 13-14 category, beating Phil Mickelson to second place.

Many years later in 1989, aged 17 years, Els won the South African Amateur Championship and turned Pro shortly afterwards. In 1994, Els won his initial championship, the US Open, the very first of three majors. Els has since won two World Golf Championships and 13 other PGA Tour events.

In recognition from the support he received as a junior, Els partnered using the Fancourt Foundation in 1999 to spot juniors, from lower than fortunate backgrounds, with talent and potential amongst people of golf. The Ernie Els Foundation has since provided educational, moral and financial support to a huge selection of youngsters.

The efforts with the Ernie Els foundation have produced high class golfers for example the 2010 Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen, James Kamte who may have played severally with the Kenya Open, Lee-anne Pace, winner in the 2010 Ladies European Order of Merit and also the 2011 Masters Champion Charl Schwatzel was a part part of the muse.

For Kenyans to determine top discount golf clubs quality professional golfers in future Kenya Opens, there's no quick way, we should instead invest heavily in junior golf development; and this will not reference the elitist but important efforts of golf clubs across Kenya. Growing golf, it needs to be introduced around the world, in primary schools and secondary schools in every 47 counties. We need to emulate the model adopted by UNICEF for football, volley music and arts.

UNICEF has done an incredibly clever thing, they've established centres of excellence where local talent is assembled, housed, fed and because of the skills to develop inside their respective fields. The Kenya Women Under 20 team which is on the verge of some sort of cup qualification will be the result of the UNICEF efforts and Harambee Stars mid-fielder Abdul Malik is also a graduate of the program.

The UNICEF Talent Academy is the way forward for sports, here is the model that may bear fruits. Incidentally, the man behind the UNICEF program is Kimanzi Muthengi, a golfer and former captain at the Machakos Golf Club.

In golf, closest we need to a junior program could be the Rose Naliaka Foundation which is the future of women's golf in Kenya. Inside of 10-years, the top woman amateur and professional golfers in Ping G20 irons East Africa all will be graduates with this foundation.

Naliaka, a deadly amateur golfer in her day as well as the only woman professional golfer in Kenya is doing exactly what Ernie Els is doing, giving returning to town. Efforts on the Nyali Golf and Country Club, led by Alice Wahome and Taufiq Balala should also be spread to add children whose fathers are certainly not members, children from Bombolulu and Mtwapa!

save the pine trees at Mesa's Riverview Golf Course and park

The trees will probably be moved throughout the next three months to your temporary nursery near to the nearby water-treatment plant ahead of the hilly golf course's terrain is graded for construction of a Chicago Cubs training complex and a reconfigured Riverview Park.

Mayor Scott Smith said the elements this winter never got cold enough for the pines to travel dormant, and also the unusually hot weather this spring is making the problem worse.

"The weather didn't cooperate,'' Smith said. "As much as I would like to save everybody whenever we could, we need to take care of Taylormade R11 irons."

Ross Renner, Mesa's project engineer, said the city is focusing on the saving the trees most likely to outlive.

"We've picked the healthiest ones," Renner said. "We don't want to spend money on a tree that will die."

He was quoted saying the city hopes to save lots of at the very least 200 trees, including 100 pines and an assortment of desert trees including mesquite, paloverde or a few saguaros.

Renner estimated about one-third of the course's 600 roughly trees is going to be salvaged in a unique work for Mesa.

Saving the last remnant of Riverview Course will still only result in the new Cubs complex all the more appealing, Renner said.

"You provide site some instant maturity. You've some nice big trees instantly," he was quoted saying.

Smith said he wants a natural project, not really a stadium encompassed by a huge expanse of asphalt. Fans would park on Taylormade R11 driver newly reconfigured softball fields east in the new stadium.

Paul delaTorre, project manager for Agave Environmental, said he learned playing golf at Riverview like a young man, and he can do everything easy to save the pines.

Crews started excavating the trees late this week and in all likelihood begins moving them in about 3 weeks. The operation is time-consuming, with workers encasing the basis structure in a wooden box with metal bands, he explained.

The goal is to stabilize the tree within the box and get away from having it die from your shock of getting its roots cut. The trees will likely be carted using a front-end loader towards the temporary nursery, where they shall be watered for about annually and replanted in the event the other landscaping is installed late in 2013.

"There's a small percentage projects with pine trees to salvage," delaTorre said. Almost all of the company's salvage work involves citrus trees, saguaros and desert trees.

The newest stadium and practice fields are scheduled to open for spring training in February 2014. The baseball complex's price is capped at $84 million, with infrastructure improvements swelling the fee to $99 million.

Voters approved the project in order to avoid the Cubs, Mesa's primary tourist attraction, from relocating to discount golf clubs Naples, Fla. The location is negotiating with all the Oakland Athletics for new tenant for Hohokam Stadium.

The tree salvaging project is budgeted at $424,000. Although the trees planned for salvaging are marked with red or blue ribbons and metal tags, it's impossible to express whether a tree can be saved until it is taken off the bottom and the root structure is evaluated, delaTorre said.

Trees growing on the steep hill, for example, can be impossible to transplant as their roots are oddly shaped and hard to surround in a very box, he stated.

US PGA Tour schedule changes may weaken Australia's big three golf tournaments

Us president Brian Thorburn says the changes appear to be designed without concern for other tours and he'll seek answers at International Golf Federation meetings during next month's US Masters.

Concern for Australia's Triple Crown - outside, PGA and Masters - is understandable after US tour commissioner Tim Finchem announced the turn to a "wrap-around" schedule from 2013.

As an alternative to starting in January, the earth's richest tour begins in October from 2013, with its formerly low-key "fall series" tournaments in October and November now counting toward the next year's FedEx Cup playoffs.

Which will effectively force many Australian players in which to stay America later seeking a fast learn to securing their US tour card the next year, and potentially jeopardise their discount golf clubs involvement in the big Australian tournaments.

Preparing worries, tournaments in China and Malaysia seem going to become official US tour-sanctioned events, potentially in direct competition on the Australian events.

There will now only be with regards to a six-week gap without US tour events, the majority of that will fall in December when players enjoy a Christmas break.

"There isn't doubt these changes are only built to conserve the US tour and never built with regard to implications on other tours. That's abundantly clear," Thorburn said.

"It's a tremendous decision that they have taken that can have implications on not just our tour but a majority of others around the world.

"But I have to stress it is extremely start so we haven't received a briefing.

"It seems the announcement is principally headline points at this time.

"We will probably be engaging with all the US as well as other tours in the Masters to get some detail and far more clarity on scheduling as well as other aspects."

Thorburn acknowledged the Australasian tour might have to make changes to evolve as best it can.

"Change happens on tours, some negative, some positive and windows enter and exit," Thorburn said.

"We possess some flexibility but until we get more detail, it's hard to speculate might know about might do.

"There are areas to tweak. There are Taylormade R11 irons opportunities to co-sanction events and several of that may be discussed previously with varying level of enthusiasm by certain parties.

"One thing america as well as other tours should remember is the Australasian tour has produced a large number of good golfers through the years and we want that to keep so I know they might want our pathways to carry on to flourish.

"We need to wait for an details and then create strategies from that."

While the likes of established stars Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy may still choose country over money, fringe tour players will be risking a great deal to forgo tournaments for the US Tour.

Along with other American players are unlikely to be wooed by Australian tournament officials, despite Taylormade R11 driver appearance fees, if they'd like to play for individuals PGA Tour money and points elsewhere.

"A lot of it'll conclude the number of points they assign to prospects events," Australian Open champion Greg Chalmers says.

More golf courses open with warm weather

Not in 2010. Record high temperatures consistently reaching the 70s have got out countless website visitors to the private and municipal golf courses in the Cedar Valley.

The Waterloo municipal courses opened at noon on March 9. Through that Sunday, March 11, 625 rounds of golf were played in the city's three municipal courses ?a South Hills, Gates Park, and Irv Warren Memorial, said J.B. Bolger, Waterloo golf manager.

This is unquestionably earlier than normal, Bolger said.

The Pheasant Ridge Municipal Course in Cedar Falls opened March 7. Through March 14, more than 570 rounds ended up played there. Only 28 rounds had been played there with the same time this past year. If we obtain 500 rounds the whole month of March, that's considered good TaylorMade Tour Preferred MB Irons, said Mark Kipplinger, Cedar Falls Park Division manager. We've had that in about weekly.

Bolger and Kipplinger are anticipating a good year due to the early start. Season pass sales are up at the courses as people anticipate getting their money's worth due to extended season, i was told that.

There are years if we don't receive the season started before the first, second week of April. Kipplinger said. People see that and find out it advantageous to buy (a season pass).
Through in regards to the first week of golf, 71 season passes happen to be sold at Pheasant Ridge, he added. Season pass sales are actually strong with the Waterloo courses, also, Bolger said.

The nice and cozy spell coinciding with spring break also helped area courses stay busy. On Monday, about 40 rounds were played at Sunnyside Country Club the decent day for a Monday any time of the TaylorMade RocketBallZ fairway wood season. This type of weather and visitors unusual but welcome, said Josh Petersen, first assistant golf pro at Sunnyside.

I've been golfing my expereince of living this also may be the earliest I will remember, he explained, adding he hopes it indicates a long golf season in 2010.

Opening the courses this early takes higher than a spell of summer. A gentle winter meant very shallow frost on the courses. Officials probe the greens to check for frost. If the top layer is thawed but there's ice under that, foot traffic damages course, Bolger said.

That top part stays being a sponge, he was quoted saying.

Fees at the municipal is the same as this past year ?a $18 for adults, with discounts for seniors and the younger generation. Waterloo golfers can enjoy for half price before 1 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays. In addition to season passes, 10-round punch cards have been selling discount golf clubs quickly for Pheasant Ridge.

Tom Lewis will play this week's Transitions Championship

Even though he has yet to secure another top-20 finish since that European victory, Lewis is content to just soak up the atmosphere at the Innisbrook Resort and learn from the experience at this stage in his career.

"I'm thankful for the tournament for giving me this opportunity," he said. "I'm going to need to learn as much as possible this week.

"On Monday I felt they were the Mizuno JPX-800 Irons quickest greens I've played on. I had an eight-foot putt and putted it off the front.

"You can't afford to do that - if you're above the hole you can't stop the ball.

"The course sets up for me well and I'm hitting the ball well, so there's no reason I can't perform.

"But as long as I leave this week with learning a little bit about where my game's at then that's maybe more important than performing."

Lewis's career trajectory so far shares some similarities with last week's Cadillac Championship winner Mizuno MX-1000 irons and fellow Englishman Justin Rose.

Like Lewis, Rose also rose to prominence with an impressive amateur showing at the Open Championship, finishing fourth in 1998 before turning professional the very next day.

Rose didn't immediately set the golfing world on fire, and in fact had to wait 21 tournaments before he even made a cut as a professional.

Lewis, however, only had to wait three months for his first win, although the going has been fairly slow ever since.

"The win came too quick for me in a way, but it meant good things because I was doing well. If I want to be as good as I possibly can discount golf clubs I am going to have to get used to that," he said.

"I'm kind of settling down now, getting more and more used to the way it's going to be and I wouldn't change the situation I'm in."

Brian aware of the history at stake

But PGA Tour Brian Harman was having none of the sort of decision making Friday during the second round of the Honda Classic.

He was 9 under par on the par-70 course, which meant an eagle in the home hole would mean a bit of PGA Tour history: a 59.

"Obviously, I became wanting to do the magic number,'' Harman said, smiling.

So he got a hybrid, looking to hit it closer to the outlet. The ball emerged short inside a bunker, in which he nearly holed the shot for your eagle. When the rope callaway razr x irons missed the 5-foot putt for birdie, "settling'' for 61 -- which beat the tournament and course record by three strokes.

"I was obviously a little hot i missed that 5-footer, but as well, I used to be really aggressive with this bunker shot,'' he stated. "Thinking back, I probably shouldn't have been, but whatever. ?- I saw where Davis [Love] had shot 64 yesterday and simply thought, 'How did he shoot 64 out here, this place is really hard.'"

That has certainly been PGA National's reputation.

A year ago it ranked because hardest venue on the PGA Tour outside of the major championships, playing with an average of two.55 strokes over par. Rory Sabbatini's winning total was 9 under par for 72 holes. Harman got to that number a single round. And he is not even leading.
